Samford quilts

A display of childhood dolls, teddys, toys & quilts was set up on the stage. I loved the painted  & quilted child's armchair made by Suzan Saliba of Sangina Longarm Quilting Services.

Samford Patchworkers Quilt Show

A visit to the Samford Patchworkers Quilt Show on the weekend with 3 of the Mexettes, L-R Marg, me & Di was a good way to catchup & see colourful, well designed & quilted pieces.

Congratulations Di on your challenge entry, in which participants has to use the 3 colours supplied on the paint chips, usually found in hardware shops. Di had hers stretched on a frame.

Congratulations also to Jenni & Heather with their prize winning work.

'Creative Time and Space'

Francie, I imagine the weather in Southern California is similar to that in Queensland, where we are known as the Sunshine State.
A friend lent me 'Creative Time and Space' & I've so enjoyed reading about the artists featured & how they manage their creative vocation. Rice Freeman-Zachery is the author & I admire her love of the colour orange, a favourite of mine also.
Half the book is about creative time- finding it, using it, finding inspiration etc & the other half deals with studio space or lack of. Waiting for the ideal studio before creating is self defeating- remodel a space to suit & make the work. After all, the creative zone is so good to be lost in!

More beach photos

More beach photos because it was so beautiful. Being Winter, the visitor numbers are lower than Summer time & only locals are out at dawn, or keen photographers.
Sunset from the Waterview Bistro, enjoyed with prawn & avocado ciabatta, duck risotto balls & some orange juice!

SotAq10 at Boonah

A drive to Boonah was in order yesterday for the installation of the STATE of the ART quilt 10 exhibition. The Boonah Regional Art Gallery is in High St & has high white walls. The great volunteer staff of Bruce, Robert & Exhibition Coordinator Ankie work smoothly together & the exhibition was soon ready. I have the installation layout preplanned & the quilts in sequence. The Gallery is open Wednesday - Sunday & the exhibition runs until October 3.

Quilt National entry

This is as much as I can show of 1 of my Quilt National entries- the rod pocket!

I got lots of the hand stitching finished as we were at Rainbow Shores, near Rainbow Beach. It was very peaceful & this is the view looking toward the coloured sand dunes.
Francie, the cuffs & collar came from a garment that had been given to me, many years ago. Yes, there's lovely gold work in it too.

Coffee break

The stylish presentation of our morning tea had us all reaching for our cameras.
The place- 'Coffee & Chocolate' Queens Plaza, Level 1, Brisbane City. Yummy!

Recycling

These are parts of garments that I plan to recycle into art quilts. The embroidered cuffs and shirt front [upside down in the photo] with shisha, would work very well with the Pukka Components, I'm thinking.

Pukka Components

I had a card to say I'd missed a postal delivery, so imagine my delight when I picked up this fabric covered parcel from the post office. It has come from India.
Fiona Wright, an Australian art quilter & travel organiser is helping women in her area of Pushkar, Rajasthan earn a wage from their stitching. Block printing is also supported & recycling of sari silk.
The scent of incense wafted tantalisingly out of the package when I opened it & beautiful brightly coloured squares of fabric spilled across my table. You can order on-line from Fiona & support Pukka Components. I'll be stitching with these lovely bits soon.

The lunch that was delicious

Last week after the opening of the Artcloth exhibition we treated ourselves to a seafood plate lunch, at Morgans, Scarborough that was delicious! So delicious I forgot to take the photo at the start & have only the remains to show.
This is the view looking back to Redcliffe shoreline from the pier.

Cake artwork

I can't resist showing more of the icing artwork from the Ekka last week.
This innovative creation was a Christmas cake.

Ekka cakes

Can you believe that these 'bags' are not fabric, mesh or leather but made of icing sugar? The crowds surrounding the display couldn't either.

Artcloth exhibition

Yesterday was a public holiday, in Brisbane for the Ekka & this luckily coincided with the opening of ARTCLOTH: Engaging New Visions at the Redcliffe City Art Gallery. Exhibition curator Marie-Therese Wisniowski opened the exhibition which is having it's only Queensland appearance at Redcliffe.
What an amazing collection of work from an international cast.
The piece above is by Norma Starszakowna from England & titles 'Razing/Raising Walls, Warsaw'. The exhibition closes on August 28.

Quilts Across Queensland

Some views of the Quilts Across Queensland exhibition, upstairs in the Dairy Hall at the Ekka.

Ekka photos

We were greeted by these colourful characters at the Ekka, which still has a week to run. It is the place where the country meets the city.
The ever popular cupie dolls, even available with cowgirl hats.

We spent 4 hours white glove duty [keeping the public from touching the quilts & answering questions] at Quilts Across Queensland, upstairs in the Dairy Hall.
