Sydney Quilt Show

I entered two quilts into the show this year. They are both from the Seduced by the Imperfect series and are hanging on the left hand side, in good company with Kay Haerland on the right.

Pets

Old English Sheep dogs are not a breed I have come across before in person, so it was a pleasure to get to know Lottie the puppy and Heffy.

Soft, cuddly and very affectionate, they made me very welcome as did their owners Sandra and Allan! Thanks for your hospitality.

Surface Design

I had a lovely time in Sydney with this group of quilters from the Quilters' Guild of NSW, exploring surface design techniques. Front L-R Deborah, Pam, Anita, Denise Back L-R Sandra, Judy, Maxine, Robyn, Jo, Wailyn. Many beautiful pieces of fabric went home for further enhancement.

Sad times

Australians are in shock and mourning for the victims of the Sydney Lindt Café hostage situation which developed yesterday. Thoughts and prayers for the victims and their families.

Sydney Quilt Show judges

Don't think I posted this photo taken by Bard Haerland of us at the end of our judging day in Sydney, earlier this month. L Robyn Brookman, myself and L Kay Haerland. Yes, we are still smiling! The volunteers who work so hard for the Quilters' Guild of NSW kept everything running smoothly and brought a lovely lunch to share.

Aboriginal paintings

The Art Gallery of NSW has some stunning Aboriginal paintings in the long hall/gallery/entry area. The colour and imagery just draw you in for a closer look. Above- detail of Arumara Tjukurpa by Hector Burton.

I love the movement in Ngayuku Mamaku Ngura by Wawiriya Burton.

 

Caught my eye

This is an art work by Tracey Emin titled "I do not expect" from 2002 and uses an old blanket for the applique base. It was being admired and photographed when I saw it at the Art Gallery of NSW.

These detail shots show the construction and old recycled materials. The phrase above appealed to my sense of humour.

It would have been quite at home in the Sydney Quilt Show which was on at the time.

 

QVB

The Queen Victoria Building in the heart of Sydney is a wonderful spot to visit and I love seeing it each year.

A letter from the Queen is housed there. This is the first time I've found it.

The special clock with dioramas which show on the hour.

Sydney walk

I took a walk in the sunshine to the Art Gallery of NSW and met a few interesting men along the way. This one above was being an exhibitionist in the fountain and rainbow.

Robbie Burns looked down on the passing pedestrians.

Quilt Show

Now this is the quilt show! Looking much better than a few days ago at the convention centre.

Opening awards ceremony getting underway is an exciting time for prize winners.

Bernina is the major sponsor of prizes.

The Best of Show quilt by Janet Treen- double wedding ring with hand applique and hand quilting.

Captain Cook

While in Sydney, I was taken somewhere I had never been before- to the landing site of Captain Cook.

It was a wet afternoon as we drove around the Kamay Botany Bay National Park. No whales in sight.

Here it is, in the distance.

The marker of where Captain Cook first set foot on Australian soil, or should I say sandstone? on April 25, 1770.

I loved all the pot holes in the area and the Sydney Rock Oysters.

 

Sydney Quilt Show week

Can you believe that this is how a quilt show begins? The inside of the Sydney Convention Centre is an empty shell. It will be transformed into the Craft and Quilt Fair, for Wednesday June 12 continuing to the 16th. I was there early, as one of the 3 judges for the Sydney Quilt Show and witnessed the start of the transformation.

Second first for the week

I entered 2 quilts in the Hands All Round international exhibition this year, for the first time. One was selected and one rejected. In the Moonlight, above was selected to be part of the exhibition which premiers in Houston at the International Quilt Festival 2013.

The quilt that was rejected isn't a bad quilt, it just didn't fit into this exhibition, so I'll enter it into something else. Don't be dejected if you are not selected, try again and have confidence in yourself. If you are n Sydney for the quilt show In the Moonlight will be there as my Judge's quilt. Gee that's another first, judging in Sydney!
