SotAq16

Very happy to have been juried into the STATE of the ART quilt 16 touring exhibition, with both my entries accepted- It's snowing in Ulaanbaatar, above and detail below and One Tree, a predominately blue quilt with leaf prints. This yearly art quilt exhibition is only open to members of Queensland Quilters Inc. the State guild. The exhibition will premier in Brisbane at Gallery 159 on April 8 at 6pm.

The STATE of the ART QUILT 15 exhibition is up at Gallery 159, 159 Payne Road, The Gap Brisbane and I had the honour of opening it as well as the privilege of jurying the pieces. It is a colourful and lively exhibition with many thought provoking pieces. The fact that there is no theme only adds to the eclectic freshness.

I have missed the last 2 openings if this exhibition in this venue and enjoyed hearing the artists who were present talk about their work. Helen above.

STATE of the ART quilt 13

Very happy to have had 2 quilts selected by juror Lisa Walton, author of Beautiful Building Block Quilts, for the Queensland Quilters STATE of the ART quilt 13 exhibition. These exhibitions began 5 years ago. I curated the first 3 and it was always great to see the quilts on display in the varied venues- art galleries, textile art festivals and special events. It all continues under the expert guidance of current curator Suzanne Marshall.

FLOOD #2 -Under Leaden Skies has not been seen in an Australian venue, as it was made for the TIQE12 exhibition. The recent heavy rain and debris floating down the Brisbane River brings back memories of the January 2011 floods and the destruction of lives and property.

This is a detail from Shake the Tree. 34 entries were received and 20 quilts selected. Congratulations to those selected and to those who didn't make it this time, please keep creating and enter again. The first viewing of the touring exhibition is at Gallery 159 April 14-27.

State of the Art

We have been at 2 exhibition openings in 3 days. The first was the STATE of the ART quilt 12 at the Boonah Regional Art Gallery, High Street Boonah. The exhibiting artists present spoke about their work and this added to the overall enjoyment of the evening.

My 2 quilts both began life in La Grange Texas during my artist residency in Nov 2010, so I decided to dress suitably to mark that fact. L-R Me in cowgirl bling, Suzanne SotA Curator, Kate exhibiting artist and Ali exhibiting artist.

STATE of the ART QUILT 12

The State of the Art Quilt 12 exhibition opened last night at the Pine Rivers Gallery. I'm sorry to have missed it, but you have the opportunity of seeing the exhibition as it runs until July 26. After that time it will be replaced by the State of the Art- Retrospective from July 28- August 18. The Gallery is at Unit 7/199 Gympie Rd. Strathpine with opening hours Monday- Saturday 10am-4pm.
I'm very happy to say I have 2 pieces in the first exhibition and 1 in the second.

STATE of the ART quilt 12

I'm very pleased to say that both the quilts I submitted for this exhibition were selected by juror Sharyn Hall. There is an embargo on showing images on our blogs until the opening at Gallery 159 April 14-23.
The exhibition is exclusively the work of members of our State guild, Queensland Quilters and goes on to tour to the Pine Rivers Art Gallery, Boonah Art Gallery, the Queensland Quilters Quilt Show and the Bribie Island gallery. 

ATASDA & DUQ

The Queensland branch of ATASDA [Australian Textile and Surface Design Association] are having their AGM today in Brisbane & have invited me along to be Guest Speaker. I'll be talking about my glorious obsession with textiles & stitch.

The latest Down Under Quilts magazine can be downloaded as a digital version for free if you visit the Creative Living Media website. It's a great way to read a magazine & not have it clutter up the book shelves. Check out pages 92-97 for work from the STATE of the ART quilt 11 exhibition.

Textile Art Festival

It's on again in Brisbane- the Textile Art Festival & Scrapbook Papercraft Expo at the Brisbane Convention Centre, South Bank this long weekend. The STATE of the ART quilt 11 exhibition looks great in it's hard wall gallery space.

Food for artists

Congratulations to all the selected artists in STATE of the ART quilt 11 exhibition. Some that I know of are Mel, Jan, Linda & Ali. We will probably hear of the exhibition at today's 2QAQ meeting.

We are often told that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I love a hearty breakfast occasionally & this one was delicious with smoked salmon, poached eggs, mushrooms & spinach. Thanks La Linea, Shop 1 /200 Old Cleveland Rd Coorparoo, for the feast.

The Big Wet

Friend Jan & I drove North, 336 kilometers to Childers to collect the STATE of the ART quilt 10 exhibition quilts. It was overcast & grey & rained heavily after Gympie & we encountered flooded creek & river crossings.

But we got through just in time, as the road was later closed due to the flooding.

This is the line of stranded motorists in the centre of Childers. All accommodation was quickly booked out, but we had our beds for the night & a memorable night it was, with a drunken disturbance down the hall. This is how I celebrated my 35th wedding anniversary, while Bob is freezing in Mongolia- life is never dull!

SotAq10 at Boonah

A drive to Boonah was in order yesterday for the installation of the STATE of the ART quilt 10 exhibition. The Boonah Regional Art Gallery is in High St & has high white walls. The great volunteer staff of Bruce, Robert & Exhibition Coordinator Ankie work smoothly together & the exhibition was soon ready. I have the installation layout preplanned & the quilts in sequence. The Gallery is open Wednesday - Sunday & the exhibition runs until October 3.

Down Under Textiles Issue 2

The second issue of Down Under Textiles is out on the shelves. I picked up my copy from Sewco yesterday as the STATE of the ART quilt 10 is featured on four pages. As Curator I'm very happy with the support we get from Australian magazines. More quilts will be featured in the June issue of Down Under Quilts.

This is a detail of Betty Bull's quilt 'Buderkin Sunset'. Jan & Ginny, thanks for your comments yesterday on Indian Adventure #2. It will be fascinating to see how the textiles are made & where they come from- glimpses behind the cloth.

STATE of the ART quilt 09- Boonah Regional Art Gallery

I had internet connection problems this morning so this post is very late. Sunnybank Quilters raised $7,000 for charity from our quilt show last Saturday. Thanks to everyone who came- it was a great day.
The STATE of the ART quilt 09 exhibition [I'm curator] is currently on show in Boonah at the Boonah Regional Art Gallery, High St. It is a long narrow gallery with great lighting & high walls & the quilts sit very well within the space.
Alison George, below, editor of i-quilt, an on-line quilting magazine opened the exhibition last Friday night.

STATE of the ART quilt 09 in Brisbane

As curator of the STATE of the ART quilt 09 exhibition, today was hanging day at the
Textile Art Festival starting tomorrow at the Convention Centre at Southbank, Brisbane. I have the before, during & after photos to share. My helpers are committee members Suzanne in purple & Mel who worked with me in Townsville where we also enjoyed the support of her husband John.

As curator of the STATE of the ART quilt 09 exhibition & part of the committee team which runs 2QAQ http://www.queenslandquiltersartquilters.blogspot.com/ I'm very happy that we've been invited to exhibit SotAq09 at the Textile Art Festival http://www.textileart.com.au/ This event will be a first for Brisbane & the recycle challenge, with prize money, will attract interesting entries I'm sure. Thought I'd share some of the views from SotAq09 in Townsville last week. The curve in some of the blue carpeted gallery walls was overcome by pinning the quilts in place.

Tropical Townsville

The warm embrace of the tropical North enveloped me as I stepped out of the Townsville airport terminal. The beautiful yellow heliconias greeted us in the hotel reception area.

The area for the STATE of the ART quilt 09 exhibition is in the foyer of the Entertainment Centre, so the different layout presented some challenges which Mel & I were able to solve. We walked back to the city Mall via the Strand & found the memorial to the Battle of the Coral Sea.

Gold Coast fun

What a great time we had at the STATE of the ART quilt 09 exhibition on the Gold Coast! Sorry, I can't share all our secrets from our time away together- but great work team.

Lots of visitors to the exhibition & Alison George from iquilt http://iquilt.com.au popped in for a close look as they have featured the exhibition in their free online magazine.

My Bernina Challenge entry, Captiv8ting was on display in the Bernina booth along with other interesting uses of the red 8. The colour palette was restricted to black, white, silver & red.

SotAq09 on the Gold Coast

I've been on the Gold Coast for the last 2 days with the 2QAQ committee, first for the opening of the STATE of the ART quilt 09 exhibition & then to talk to visitors at the exhibition. Alison Muir, above L flew in from Sydney to open the exhibition & give us her insights into the jury process. We were very grateful that she could join us for the occasion. Kate Oszko, above R Qld Quilters president presents Alison with a token of our appreciation. Most of the 2QAQ committee were on hand for the opening. SotAq09 is hung!

There was a definite air of excitement as the SotAq09 hanging team of Kate, Suzanne, Mel [above L-R] & I assembled at the entry to our gallery space at Craft Fest. I had THE PLAN & we had hung, adjusted, put up signs & had coffee in the space of 2 1/2 hours. Thanks team!
