Colourful work

Bernardine Hine R was guest speaker at the 2QAQ meeting and spoke to us about her artistic development and  process. Her daughter Lorelai was her lovely assistant.

Bernardine is well known for her bird portraits and floral compositions using her hand dyed and dye painted fabrics. It was great to see her development over the years and the steps she has taken, with many awards along the way.

World Quilt

It was a great relief to have the Australian quilts from the World Quilt 2013 competition delivered last week. The 10 quilts have been touring in the USA with a final showing in January 2014 in Florida. The Official Program Book, a quilt critique and winners list is sent to all entrants. This was my final duty as retired Australian coordinator. In 2014 Brenda Gael Smith will be the coordinator, so please contact her for up to date information and an entry form in March.
It has been such an honour and privilege to be the coordinator for the past 8 years. The entrants boxes are travelling home now.

World Quilt Competition XVII

It has been my privilege to have been the Australian coordinator for the World Quilt competition for the past 8 years. Many Australian quilters have taken part in the annual competitions and have won prizes on the world stage. This year is no exception with Margaret McDonald and Susan Campbell taking out the Traditional Best Use of Colour award.
Eileen Campbell was winner of Best of Australia and an Honourable Mention for the 2 quilts she entered.
The 10 quilts entered this year came from experienced, well known quilters and others beginning their exciting journey. It is a competition for all levels and the quilts tour to many USA venues for 6 months.
I am retiring as coordinator to spend more time travelling and am happy to tell you Brenda Gael Smith will be coordinator in 2014.

So happy for my friend Kate Oszko who is featured in Vol 22 No 8 of the Australian Patchwork and Quilting magazine on pages 60-63. Kate has also stitched up a quilt project for readers beginning on page 52.

Just a reminder for Australians wanting to enter the 2013 World Quilt competition that the deadline is approaching. Please have your entry materials to me by May 20. This includes a digital full and detail image, signed entry form and fee.

The World Quilt Competition 2013 form is now available on my website for Australians wishing to enter. I would encourage everyone interested in having their work seen by a wider International audience [4 different USA venues] to enter. If we have 10 Australian entries we have a Best of Country award as well as being eligible for the other prizes. All quilts receive a critique. Please contact me if you have any questions.
And if you and your friends would like to see the World Quilt Show New England XI, the first Australian tour to visit and be part of the event will be in August 2013. World Quilt Show – New England XI
Manchester, New Hampshire – August 15-18, 2013

 Walking into the World Quilt Show – New England, one is almost overwhelmed by the spectacular display of magnificent quilts from around the world on exhibit. Standing out among all the quilts on display are the quilts competing in the World Quilt Competition, an always beautiful collection that makes awarding “Best of Show a very difficult task for the judges. The 2013 competition will be no different!  

The premier of the World Quilt Competition XVII will be at the World Quilt Show - New England XI, returning to the Radisson Center of New Hampshire in Manchester, August 15 – 18, 2013 where the competition will be judged. From New Hampshire, the international entries and selected winning U.S. entries will tour to three more Mancuso Show Management quilt festivals across the U.S. Be sure to take an opportunity to view this international collection of beautiful and culturally unique creativity and talent.

Now in its seventeenth year, this international quilt competition draws entries from across the globe. The 2013 World Quilt Competition will feature quilts from Australia, Canada, Germany, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States competing for over $10,000 in prize money. Best of Country from among the entries for each nation will be chosen as well as the prestigious Best of World Award winner. Visitors to the World Quilt Show – New England also have an opportunity to vote for their favorite quilt entry to win the Viewer’s Choice Award.

World Quilt competition

It is great to get the support of local quilting magazines and State Guilds in promoting the work of Australian quilters who enter the World Quilt competition, which is held each year. As the Australian coordinator I try to spread the word about the competition, so we can get 10 or more entries and have a Best of Country award. This year our quilters took out 4 major awards!

 

The latest Quilters Companion No. 58 features the quilts on pages 64-66. And Down Under Quilts had a great 3 page spread in Issue 154.

 

Your invitation to join me on a tour

I'm very pleased to announce that the first World Quilt Show Tour from Australia will be heading to the USA in August 2013. I am the subject expert on this fully escorted 17 day tour and it would be wonderful if you could join me!
Some of the areas we are visiting are Philadelphia, Amish country, New York, Boston and Manchester for the World Quilt Show. As part of the tour package you will be able to take a one day workshop at the show and attend the luncheon and other special events. Of course fabric shopping is well catered for as well as the history of the small section of the  US East Coast that we visit.

World Quilt Competition

Australian quilters and indeed quilters worldwide, have the opportunity to win cash prizes and have their work tour in the USA, if they enter the World Quilt Competition. Traditional and innovative work is accepted and there are many categories for prizes including Best of Show and Best of Country. Generally entries from 10 countries compete for the awards.

World Quilt Show Florida

I'm happy to be going on to Florida, West Palm Beach after Houston Festival, to teach 3 workshops at the World Quilt Show Florida Nov 10-12. Special Luncheon/Lecture: On Saturday, November 12, at 12:30pm Dierdra McElroy will share her experiences growing up in Tahiti. The island paradise has it’s own traditional form of quilt making which is intertwined with every aspect of its culture and history. The audience will be transfixed with historical details, cultural norms, and exotic photographs of nature as they are laid side by side with the Tifaifai (tee-fay-fay) design that honors its existence. Dierdra’s presentation includes lunch - Penne alla Bolognese, Salad, fresh baked garlic breadsticks, iced tea or coffee, and chef’s selection of dessert. Tickets for the luncheon / lecture are available for $28; seating is limited.

USA events

With barely 2 months to go before I fly to the USA, the arrivals in the post yesterday reminded me of this again. First the catalogue for the International Quilt Festival in Houston Nov 3-6, with Preview night on the 2nd. On page 5 is a little note about Destination Texas, my exhibition which will be in good company with many other special exhibits, one being the Twelve by Twelve International Art Quilt Challenge. If you follow their blog you'll know what they get up to! I'll be buying their book in Houston so I can get 11 of the 12 to sign it.

The second item was the catalogue from the World Quilt Show Florida III Nov 10-12 at the Palm Beach County Convention Center, West Palm Beach. I'm thrilled to be one of the tutors for this event in it's third year. I will get to see a small part of Florida for the first time & dip my toe in the Atlantic Ocean! Hope you can join me for a workshop or the lecture. If you live on the West coast I will also be a tutor at the 20th Pacific International Quilt Festival in Santa Clara California Oct 13-16.

Your quilt will be admired by thousands of viewers at 4 major quilt shows in the USA run by Quilt Fest. Mancuso Show Management who run the festivals are donating $10 for each quilt entered to the Japan Relief Appeal.

Friday May 20 is the deadline for entries, so please post before then or express overnight post. And good luck to all who have entered so far. When we get 10 entries or more we are eligible for a Best of Country Award. World Quilt Competition 2010

As the Australian coordinator for the World Quilt Competition, I'm happy to say the 2010 entry form is now available from my website. Entries are due May 17. I process them and send them on to the jury in the USA & entants hear by June 16 regarding selection. Quilts are then due, to me by July 7. I arrange all the international shipping & forms.
Your quilt will tour & be seen in 4 major quilt shows in the States from New England & Pensylvania to California & Florida. It's a great opportunity for cash prizes and awards for traditional & contemporary quilters. Contact me if you have any questions.

The latest issue of Down Under Quilts No. 137 has a 5 page spread on the Australian entries in the World Quilt contest 2009. Linda Steele from Victoria was the winner of Best of Australia from these entries.

This finely detailed & textured quilt Plight of the Mallee Fowl is by Kathy Brown & was the Best of Country- Australia last year at the World Quilt Contest.

I'm the Australian coordinator of the World Quilt Contest & the call for 2009 entries is now on. Digital image entries & the paperwork need to be with me by April 24. Traditional & innovative entries are in the running for great US$ prize money. The entries tour in the USA from August-November & I return your quilt before Christmas. The minimum size required has been lowered which may fit in with your contemporary quilt making sizes.
