Great bag

Mary Ann was a student in the Oil Stick Intensive workshop in Florida last November and has kindly sent photos of her finished bag. She rubbed the designs during the class.

Looks so wonderful on the black and this shoulder bag has a front flap and pockets.

Thanks for sharing Mary Ann- I know no one else will have such a special bag!

Oil Stick Intensive at Florida World Quilt Show

Now that I have recovered my camera, which was in the lost/found bag, I can share some photos of the great work produced by my lovely students in Oil Stick Intensive. Marianne & Maria were with me for all 3 workshops & many others came to 2 of the classes, so there will be many combinations of techniques in their future work.

Caught my eye in Florida #2

Bridget Wilson Matlock was a student in my Monoprinting Magic workshop & was very excited to have won a ribbon with her quilt 'Queen Nemo' detail above.

Lisa Gorski has an interesting story to go with 'Zebra'. Hope the print is large enough for you to read it.

Happy ending

I'm about to get on a flight heading home, but wanted everyone to know the happy ending to the lost bag story.

I was contacted via e-mail from my business card in the bag, which had been picked up from the gutter, by a man & his wife on their way to the movies. He worked a late shift yesterday, so didn't have time until this morning to contact me.

Can you see me grinning from here? I was able to reward them for their honesty, time & effort in returning the bag. They also loved my quilts that were in the bag.

Caught my eye in Florida

It is so evident that as quilters, we are influenced by our surroundings. The following is a selection that caught my eye at the Florida World Quilt Show. 'Breezy' above by Janine Ward. Janine is also the maker of 'Brown Pelicans'.

Unlike the white pelicans we have in Australia, I saw brown pelicans when on the intercoastal waterway yesterday on a Diva Duck tour.

Opal Fever- Florida World Quilt Show

Opal Fever students with their beautiful opal creations & variations. Interesting for me to see the opals in painted silk in the work of Ellen S. We had 3 delightful Ellens in the class! Angelina stole the show in the afternoon.

West Palm Beach Florida

Everywhere I look I am seeing palm trees. The Town Center is a large shopping/eating area. I feel like I'm on the Gold Coast, with the beautiful warm weather & holiday atmosphere.

World Quilt Show Florida

I'm happy to be going on to Florida, West Palm Beach after Houston Festival, to teach 3 workshops at the World Quilt Show Florida Nov 10-12. Special Luncheon/Lecture: On Saturday, November 12, at 12:30pm Dierdra McElroy will share her experiences growing up in Tahiti. The island paradise has it’s own traditional form of quilt making which is intertwined with every aspect of its culture and history. The audience will be transfixed with historical details, cultural norms, and exotic photographs of nature as they are laid side by side with the Tifaifai (tee-fay-fay) design that honors its existence. Dierdra’s presentation includes lunch - Penne alla Bolognese, Salad, fresh baked garlic breadsticks, iced tea or coffee, and chef’s selection of dessert. Tickets for the luncheon / lecture are available for $28; seating is limited.

USA events

With barely 2 months to go before I fly to the USA, the arrivals in the post yesterday reminded me of this again. First the catalogue for the International Quilt Festival in Houston Nov 3-6, with Preview night on the 2nd. On page 5 is a little note about Destination Texas, my exhibition which will be in good company with many other special exhibits, one being the Twelve by Twelve International Art Quilt Challenge. If you follow their blog you'll know what they get up to! I'll be buying their book in Houston so I can get 11 of the 12 to sign it.

The second item was the catalogue from the World Quilt Show Florida III Nov 10-12 at the Palm Beach County Convention Center, West Palm Beach. I'm thrilled to be one of the tutors for this event in it's third year. I will get to see a small part of Florida for the first time & dip my toe in the Atlantic Ocean! Hope you can join me for a workshop or the lecture. If you live on the West coast I will also be a tutor at the 20th Pacific International Quilt Festival in Santa Clara California Oct 13-16.

Vidcast with Bonnie

In New Zealand at the Remarkable Symposium, earlier this year, I had the pleasure of meeting Bonnie McCaffery above R, an American quilter who has pioneered a number of great techniques & written books about them. Bonnie is also well known for her Vidcasts which she records around the world. I was nervous but thrilled that Bonnie asked me to record one with her. Now it's out & you can see it here.
