AQIPP 2015

Have you ever entered a quilt or 2 in an Australian Quilts in Public Places exhibition? I have, several times and even won and was acquired by the Immigration Museum in 2001. Aussie quilts

Australian quilters are among the best in the world of quilt art. A special exhibition curated by Brenda Gael Smith named Australia Quilts, 34 exceptional quilts from the great Southern Land will premier at the Carrefour European Patchwork meeting in September from 18-21. I feel very privileged to have Flood #3 Flotsam included.
Congratulations to all the Australian quilters who submitted work to the World Quilt Competition for the USA tour and to those who won prizes, well done!

Beach art

The playground at  Wellington Point had these interesting 'counting' stepping stones with ceramic sea creatures set into the pebble base.

To me it was beach art for the kids and parents to enjoy.

The fish were my favourite although it was hard to decide as I loved the individual variations on each creature.

 

Sandy

I have been missing from the blogosphere as we have had 2 lovely little visitors and have been doing things they enjoy. A warm sunny day at Wellington Point was perfect for Miss 4 and her 17 month old sister.

Sitting and eating our curried egg sandwiches and burying Mummy's feet,

followed by a stroll around the corner, while the tide was out.

Another

This is another quilt I'm working on for the Golden Textures exhibition, shown here as a detail. I'm looking forward to seeing a few of them together on the design wall as they progress along.

Progress

You may remember this photo of my sun dyed fabric. It now is in a piece of work in progress and looks more like the photo below with stitching to be completed.

 

Morning tea

The Willows Tea Room and Café at Mt Gravatt [ opposite Photo Continental]was a nice discovery when Bob and I stopped for a Devonshire morning tea. The décor is very pretty and the coffee excellent. Yes, we had coffee rather than tea with our light and fluffy, warm scones.

Groups are catered for with a long table, beautifully set, in the back room and high teas are available. 

Potatoes

This Potato Tornado [and there were several other names for it] was a new food item at the Ekka, so we had to try it. A novel idea and presentation for hot chips and certainly enough for two.
Going back to the earlier posts this week regarding the detail photos of the quilts entered in Quilts Across Queensland, I'd like to apologise for not acknowledging the skilled makers of the lovely pieces that caught my eye. You deserve to have been acknowledged and I slipped up, sorry.

 

Cake decorating

The cake decorating competition in the Fine Arts Pavilion is always crowded but I managed to take a couple of photos without too much reflection as these beauties are behind glass. The Princess and the Pea above. Today is People's Day, the Brisbane Show Holiday, a day when record crowds are often seen at the venue.

 

Hexagons

There were a few hexagon quilts at Quilts Across Queensland that caught my eye. I think it is interesting to see the colour combinations and the quilting of these quilts which take any hours to hand piece.

Ekka quilt colour

The Quilts Across Queensland display is in the upstairs section of the Dairy Pavilion while the Ekka is on for another week.

I snapped a few details of colourful quilts. It is wonderful to have quilters support this show and see the genuine interest of the people who pass through the pavilion. So congratulations to all who enter.

This is a detail of Bernadine Hine's great quilt which was awarded Best Use of Colour.

Sun prints

This is a great technique and perfect for my expression of Seduced by the Imperfect. While the fabric is saturated with the wet dye, place your objects on it and wait for the fabric to dry and the magic to be revealed.

 

Golden Textures

I have been selected as one of the exhibiting artists for Golden Textures in Maryborough Victoria at the Central Goldfields Art Gallery. The exhibition will run from February 21- April 5 2015. My  series is titled Seduced by the Imperfect and I'm excited to be making these new works.

A week or two ago it was very sunny and still enough to begin the dye process outside in my small backyard. Love this palm frond shadow- an idea for future work?

My colour palette is muted grey at this point so I was aiming for various effects with the dye. I am not using procion dyes for this as they are very water intensive and instead have found instant gratification with the Kraftkolour sun dyes made in Australia.

Pegs and beach pebbles help keep my fabric in position while the dyes work and dry.

And  a bit of shadow play while waiting!

 

Viewpoints 9

This round I set the challenge for the group, "A stitch in time saves 9". I have enjoyed seeing the responses from members who post over on Viewpoints 9 blog. My own thoughts will be revealed on August 27, but this was the start.
 

Florence Biennale

Thanks Florence Biennale for selecting me as an artist to exhibit in 2015. I certainly feel very appreciated but am declining this one as the euros are not currently available for this self funded artist.

Singapore rubbings

When I visited Singapore last November I did some rubbings with Rhonda. The fabric I used was a hand dye that was very bright and the rubbings were not standing out, so what to do? White paint was the answer and I like it much better now.

More work on this piece to come yet and it is shelved for now while I work on the next deadline.
