We don't have bears of this variety in Australia, just Drop Bears, [Aussie term for Koalas]. It was an intricate way of opening the bin, but bear proof & was located on Sandia Peak, 9,876ft, the highest mountain top in New Mexico, overlooking Albuquerque.
Sue - when we lived in the US we came to realise just how dangerous and fast bears could be - locals learn about them just as we learn about dealing with snakes and spiders. I could never understand the "joke" about drop bears - someone I knew used to think it was hilarious to tell non-Aussies that we had them and watch their reactions - I don't know, maybe I have a v boring sense of humour!!!
