Ned Kelly
No Kate I didn't buy the scarf but did buy this Ned Kelly plastic kitsch necklace at the Art Gallery. This iconic Australian bushranger was the subject of a series of enamel paintings on composition board by Sir Sidney Nolan [1917-1992] in the 1940's. Most of the series is housed at the National Gallery in Canberra. Ned fashioned a suit of armour out of shovels & ploughs & the original face mask has bullet impact dents. It was on tour a few years ago & came to the Queensland State Library.

A lot of the paintings were on display at Lanyon just south of Canberra for many years - you can imagine the comments. My favourite "well, it's not easy painting in oils"!!!
ReplyDeleteI saw the armour at the State Library of Victoria Library earlier this year - absolutely worth a visit.
