Art Quilt Australia 2015

Art Quilt Australia 2015 exhibition at the National Wool Museum in Geelong, 24 October-13 December 2015. Unfortunately I won't be able to make it to Geelong to see the exhibition, but if you get the chance to visit enjoy the work. Below is a detail from Tangled, used in the promotion of the exhibition.

On the design wall

Have been working on this small quilt using the pieces of surface designed fabric created during my teaching at the TAFTA Forum in Geelong last September/October. It has been good to put it together and remember the fun we all had in class. It was cold doing the rubbings outside and the wet weather was not appreciated, but we got through it.

This batik boomerang fabric seemed to be fitting for the back. 

Studio design wall

I have been pulling fabric out and auditioning pieces on my studio design wall. These are silks that have been eco dyed at a workshop with Kirsten Ingemar from Brunswick Heads NSW. I will do something with them next year when I have some time.

This is pieced and now has been basted ready for quilting. It is the souvenir of my time at the Geelong Grammar School for the Textile Retreat. Just needs stitching.
 

Generous

This is a photo of part of the beautiful book my Geelong students presented me with on the last day. I have forgotten to share it with you, but it is never far from my mind as there is a page for me to add a fabric piece made in Geelong.

This is such a beautiful reminder of what the week was all about.

 

Textile Souvenirs

This is the large, rubbing that Sue-Ann put together from various signs, brick walls and other objects in the grounds of Geelong Grammar School. It is a great textile souvenir of her week.

Geelong influence

After the intensive 5 day workshop at the Geelong Forum Textile Retreat, we have all kept in touch and it is wonderful to see the work and further explorations coming from the group. We are acting as a cheer squad for each other- I think there needs to be more of this type of encouragement and support. Above- a journal cover made by Anne from Indian cotton fabric, hand dyed, painted fusible and hand made cord.

Lucy has been putting the techniques we covered to good use in her own original designs above and below. You can see more of her work on her blog.

Liz is a felter and has great textured pieces incorporating fabrics from the week. It is very exciting to see the results of her work.

Boy we had a great week and it has taken me this week to recover and put the woolly clothes away as a heat wave strikes Brisbane. We rubbed, printed and danced all week. Lots to look at in the grounds as installations by Susan Holmes appeared.

The Sinclair Gallery hosted the tutors exhibition.

Textile Souvenirs

Today I'm sharing photos, with permission, of some of the wonderful work my students produced at this 5 day Geelong Textile Retreat. I didn't take as many photos as I would have liked because we were all working so hard! Interacting with the local environment is part of the process.

Seeing dots

There is always a lot of fun and opportunity to dress up at the Geelong Forums and this year polka dots and paisley were the themes. My student Julie did us proud, winning a prize at the first night dinner.

Geelong Textile Retreat

As I mentioned last week, I have been away at the Geelong Grammar School for a week long retreat, teaching Textile Souvenirs and what fun we had! The school grounds are very impressive and beautifully maintained. The ivy covered walls transport you back to pictures of English boarding schools.

Once our workshop got underway we soon had coloured pieces of fabric pegged or spread on the grass. The weather did not treat us kindly but decided to change and shine on the last day of class!

Geelong Forum Textile Retreat

When I got home from Canberra's Mini Retreat I unpacked and packed again for the TAFTA Geelong Forum Textile Retreat which is a week long event, ending October 5 with an Open House from 9am-12noon.This is free and many traders will be selling textile items, books and other great stuff! Lunch in the Dining Hall is $10 for visitors.
I'm looking forward to seeing the work which will come out of my Textile Souvenirs workshop.

Geelong Forum Textile Retreat

If you can't join me on tour to the USA in August 2013 for the World Quilt Show or in Italy, Abruzzo June 2014 then perhaps consider the Geelong Forum Textile Retreat September 29- October 5, 2013 in Australia. Bookings are now being taken for the 10 workshops on offer with 5 international and 5 Australian tutors.

My 5 day Textile Souvenirs is on offer and I'm delighted to be part of the teaching team at this event, having been a student there twice in the past. I'm totally in love with this workshop as it is what I love doing in my own work and to see what the students develop in the generous time frame is amazing.
Thanks for all of your generous comments yesterday re Abruzzo. When I began teaching many years ago in Mt. Isa I never dreamt I'd be doing it in the international arena. It is so rewarding to be able to share my knowledge and expertise with a wide audience.
