Hanging quilts

Here is a little glimpse of how the Beautiful Australia quilts were hung in Townsville the other week at the Stitches and Craft Show. Thanks to Annette Sibson who hung the exhibition and took these photos for me. All the quilts have Velcro hanging strips sewn on top and bottom, making it very quick to put up an entire exhibition.

I was also impressed by the lovely signage for the work. No mistaking the artist statement and the quilt it goes with!

Beautiful Australia exhibition

The Beautiful Australia exhibition now begins a tour of 4 Stitches and Craft Shows, the first in Townsville, North Queensland from October 3-6 at the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre, Breakwater Island.

I packed and sent the quilts to Expertise Events who manage these shows.

Curious books

Do books have to be the traditional shape? No, not according to the members of the Fibres & Fabrics Association who participated in presenting books in unusual containers of all shapes & sizes. A sheep's head, toothpaste tube, shell & mobile phone all held a book. The rags to riches to rags book in the perfume or was it an ink bottle, in the foreground left me smiling.

Townsville palms & a surprise

What a great surprise this morning on the way to the Entertainment Centre- this always happens when I haven't packed my oil sticks! I was drawn in by the wonderful textures of the "junk" making up these street sculptures & on closer inspection found them to be anthills!! Created in 2004 they stand at the end of the Mall opposite the Perc Tucker Gallery.

The wonderful colours, form, lines & value of sunlight in the palms are inspirational. Trunks, fronds & seeds all intrigue & set the mind racing with ideas.

Caught my eye in Townsville # 2

The diversity of the Fibres & Fabrics Association is noticeable when they combined their talents for their Threads of Habitat exhibition, an installation drawn from the sensory experience of rainforest & scrub areas. Part of that exhibition has been reinstalled at Craft Fest. What looked like a dry creek bed of tumbled rocks was on closer inspection totally woman made- apologies to any male members of the group!

Leaves made in a variety of techniques climbed the walls & tumbled to the floor. This branch with it's leaves was made from the seed bearing bract of a palm. Crocheted lichen decorated this log.

The colours are brighter, the frangipani flowers bigger & the insects too in Townsville!

At Craft Fest the Fibres & Fabrics Association have a wonderful display of the diverse work this group of quilters, embroiderers, spinners, weavers, basket & book makers. Unfortunately the work is not named, but many pieces caught my eye so I'll share them here & in the next post.

The needle felting embellisher created the grass tree landscape.

Hand painted & enhanced portraits & a confetti style sunset or sunrise.
