Porchetta

This, we were told is the champion porchetta maker. They were part of the huge market in Sulmona the morning we were leaving and we were too full of breakfast to try any.

It smelt divine. The whole pig is boned out and slowly roasted for hours.

Other things to see in Sulmona are the churches and this 'old man' fountain, looking more like a lion's head.

Ovid was born in Sulmona and the men cluster round for an evening chat. We love seeing everyone out on the streets in the early evening- young in prams, walking and on bicycles, elderly walking with younger family members or friends, people in wheelchairs enjoying the Spring weather and us two Aussies who got lots of stares.

This grand entry is in an old baron's home and now houses a retirement community in Sulmona. We were invited in to photograph the original plaster ceilings.

 

Fabric and other things

I was running out of fabric to print and was waiting to get to a patchwork shop, but just around the corner from Sei Stelle was this great shop which had just what I needed- in fact 3 white 100% cotone fabrics to choose from.

Many customers were in buying bits and pieces that afternoon. Unlike shops in Australia, the goods are generally behind the counters and you are assisted in finding what you need.
And touching the fruit and vegetables is a big 'no-no'! I did forget once!

And just across the street was a home wares fabric store with lovely wool blankets, tablecloths, linen etc plus these pieces of Gobelin style fabric table runners, which I was touching as many were being opened up for me to look at. Yes, one jumped into my suitcase!

We also experienced a large post office, having only been into small ones we didn't know what to do, but were helped to get the ticket for the waiting.

 

Confetti

Sulmona is also known as the home of 'confetti' and the sugar coated almonds or chocolates make colourful displays outside the shops.

These flowers even have little lady bugs on them.

Sulmona

Sulmona is a town in Abruzzo, to the east of Rome and was home for a couple of nights on our way north, up the east coast of Italy. We stayed at Sei Stelle B&B and it was a perfect location with a great host Davide. The town has a big event at Eastertime, the 'Running Madonna' and in July jousting in the Piazza Garibaldi which we looked into from our accommodation. The crests are for the different teams/districts for jousting. I think the towel animals were elephants with their trunks making a heart shape.

The mountains were still snow capped, but it was warmer than further south.

Sulmona is known for a number of things and one is the aquaduct which runs through the town.

It borders one side of the big piazza and makes a good spot to sit near and watch the evening passagiata.

Part of it also formed the wall in the breakfast room. This section and original crest were found when the building was undergoing renovations.
