Art Quilt Australia 2015

Art Quilt Australia 2015 exhibition at the National Wool Museum in Geelong, 24 October-13 December 2015. Unfortunately I won't be able to make it to Geelong to see the exhibition, but if you get the chance to visit enjoy the work. Below is a detail from Tangled, used in the promotion of the exhibition.

Quilt exhibitions

I have packed up a few quilts that were accepted for various exhibitions to open later this year. This always takes longer than I think it will. Do all the quilts have rod pockets and labels? Have I got the right size plastic bag to put the quilt in to keep it safe and dry? I prefer to use plastic as it is water proof and I have had soggy parcels arrive on my doorstep in the past! Now for the post office preferred box or bag. Check the delivery address, include return postage- I think we are ready to go!

They will be seen in Geelong at the National Wool Museum in the Art Quilt Australia 2015 exhibition from October 23- December 13 2015. This is an initiative of Ozquilt network, the Australian organisation for art quilters.
Another quilt Garden Life is now in Melbourne for Australian Quilts in Public Places 2015 Light & Life at the Whitehorse ArtSpace Box Hill Town Hall from November 13- December 22 2015.

A new quilt purchase

I was delighted to purchase a Susan Matthews quilt and loved the gold wrapping it came in.

Coastal Banksia 2 was part of the Ozquilt Network's Australia Wide 3 touring exhibition. The next exhibition, number 4 will premier in Adelaide on October 24.

 

Private artist talks

The conference organised by Ozquilt Network was very well done, with a great program of talks, behinds the scenes viewing of textiles and introduction to the uniqueness of Canberra, which was celebrating the 100th anniversary of establishment as the capital. Above Deborah Weir explains the concept behind her quilt Willy-willy. Deborah travelled from the USA to be at the conference.

Canberra based artist Diane Firth talks about her work City of Trees which had net panels casting lovely shadows as it was hung away from the wall.

 

Art Quilt Australia

The Art Quilt Australia 2013- people, place and nation exhibition opened on the weekend in Canberra at Craft ACT, London Circuit and continues to December 14. I was so surprised to see I was the 'cover girl' for the catalogue with my detail image of Flood #1 River rising! I think this is a first and rounds out a great 2013.

Valerie Kirk, above was the curator of the exhibition and the call from Ozquilt Network, the organisation with the vision for this exhibition, was for larger pieces which looked wonderful in the gallery space.

L Boat People by Helen Gray with Flood#1 River rising. The quilts were displayed beautifully within a grouping, paired or individually. Well worth a visit if you are in Canberra and it is free to enter the Craft ACT galleries.

Art Quilt Australia: people, place and nation

The Art Quilt Australia: people, place and nation opens on Friday November 1 in Canberra at the Craft ACT craft and design centre and runs until December 14. This juried exhibition is from
Ozquilt Network the Australian organisation for art quilters and a conference will be held in conjunction with the exhibition opening. The good news is that you don't have to be a member to attend the conference. The website has the details and there is still time to register.

Art Quilt Australia 2013

I'm very happy to have had 2 quilts from my Flood series accepted for the Art Quilt Australia 2013- People, Place & Nation exhibition organised by Ozquilt Network Inc. This exhibition will be part of the conference being organised for art quilters, whether you are an Ozquilt member or not and looks very interesting with some exclusive access to the National Gallery in Canberra.
Above is a detail of Flood #1- River Rising. Flood #3- Flotsam, detail below, is also in the exhibition. These 2 quilts have previously been shown in Taiwan at TIQE 2012.

The exhibition is at Craft ACT Craft and Design Centre from November 1- December 14.
Congratulations to all the artists selected and hope to see you in Canberra.

Australia Wide Three exhibition

The Australia Wide Three exhibition opens at Gallery 159, The Gap, Brisbane this weekend. Come along to the opening at 3pm on Saturday May 18. The exhibition continues until June 2.

The latest travelling exhibition by Australia’s national organization for art quilters, Ozquilt Network Inc. is touring Australia.

Ozquilt Network President, Margery Goodall said this is the third, biennial travelling exhibition this prolific group has created.

 “The 34 stitched, layered works, which are 40cm x 40 cm,  showcase original and diverse interpretations of contemporary textile art from Australia’s leading and emerging quilt artists,” she said.  “A professionally selected exhibition of members’ work, Australia Wide Three will excite viewers with the infinite possibilities of ‘the quilt’ in art.

“Founded in 1998, Ozquilt Network Inc. has a long and respected history promoting excellence within contemporary quilt making in Australia.”

Margery said the selectors read as a ‘whose who’ in the world of textile art: renowned textile artists Deborah Brearley, Victoria, (expert quilter, painter, author and tutor); Tony Dyer, Victoria, (a lecturer and master of diverse textile techniques who has works in many prestigious collections in Australia and overseas); and Carolyn Sullivan, NSW, (highly regarded multiple award winning quiltmaker, embroiderer and author).

“In comparison to other art forms, textile art takes a joyfully long time to create,  which is one of the reasons why art quilt exhibitions appeal greatly to the general public.  This form of art has evolved out of utilitarian quilt making into a highly personalised form of self - expression ”.   Australia Wide Three is touring nationally until June 2014

Australia Wide 3

Tussock by Brenda Gael Smith was in the Australia Wide 2 exhibition and I'm now its proud owner.The Australia Wide 3 exhibition, by members of Ozquilt Network is officially opened today and the website has all the quilts for your viewing pleasure. It is interesting to see the inspiration of the various artists and their interaction with the Australian environment.

The Ozquilt Network Austalia Wide 3 exhibition opens today at the
Fairfield City Museum and Gallery. 34 pieces from members will be on display until 24 November 2012. The official opening is October 13 and the work will then be on the Ozquilt website. My work Counting #2 was selected. I have used the seed pods of the Poinciana tree on my footpath for the imagery. Numerous seed pods drop into my garden each year and open to release many seeds.

All the work in the exhibition is 60cm square and many are for sale.
Now to answer some comments from the 2 previous posts-
Yes, we have a couple of Taiwanese restaurants/cafes in Sunnybank. Contact me and we'll go for lunch treats.
The yellow walls at the Everhart Gallery are left over from a B&W photographic exhibition and then an exhibition about bees. The gallery has small internal spaces and they have found the yellow gives it more life, rather than white or grey.

Australia Wide #3

Congratulations to all Ozquilt Network members who have had their work selected to tour in the third Australia Wide exhibition. Above is a detail view of my piece Counting #2 which will be part of the tour.

'Shake the Tree'

The final blue quilting before the black binding was stitched in place. Interesting how this quilt was used as a jumping off point for the next 40cm square quilt I made for one of my 2 entries for Australia Wide #3. I think this is a good reason to keep working, developing ideas and designs; some will hit the mark and you will have a series and a body of work!

Colour Patch Series- Yellow & White

While my work was not selected for the Quilt National exhibition in Athens, Ohio next year, I'm very happy to say that 'Colour Patch Series- Yellow & White' is the chosen image for the Ozquilt Network invitation to the Australia Wide Two exhibition, opening on October 22- December 5 at the Fairfield City Museum & Gallery.

'Colour Patch Series- Yellow & White' has been juried into the touring Ozquilt members' exhibition 'Australia Wide Two'. All the pieces are 15.5" [40cm] square & will begin the tour in October at the Fairfield City Museum & Gallery. The Ozquilt webite will have details & images in October.

Art Quilt Australia- the opening

Following the Ozquilt Network conference at which we heard speakers Valerie Kirk, Head of Textiles ANU School of Art, Bea Brickhill, Director of the Australia Business Arts Foundation & Barbara Macey, founder of Ozquilt Network, we went to the opening of Art Quilt Australia at Craft ACT.

Many of the quilts were hung away from the wall allowing the viewer to walk around the pieces & through the installation style setting. Those with transparent delicacy of silks & sheers glowed under the lights & we appreciated both sides equally.
Catalogues are available from Ozquilt Network & the exhibition shows until December 19, a powerful, thought provoking exhibition.

I'm off to Canberra ACT today for the Ozquilt Network conference tomorrow & the opening of the Art Quilt Australia exhibition at Craft ACT. Exploring the Art Quilt Practice

This is the title of the Ozquilt Conference being held in conjunction with the opening of the Art Quilt Australia exhibition [click on the button opposite] in Canberra on November 7. A busy weekend with the Sunnybank Quilt Show & the 2QAQ meeting with the ARTiculation Afternoon panel of 3 inspiring speakers talking about Texture.

I have had more good news with my quilt 'Spirit Land' detail pictured, being selected for the Art Quilt Australia exhibition organised by Ozquilt Network Inc. This exhibition will be seen in Canberra at Craft ACT from November 7 - December 19, 2009.

Australia Wide opening

Our third exhibition opening in 4 days- but this time I had to give the opening address for the touring Ozquilt Network Inc. http://www.ozquiltnetwork.org.au exhibition Australia Wide. The 48, 40cm square quilts look stunning in Gallery 159, 159 Payne Rd The Gap, Brisbane as you can see in the background of these shots.

Janet was her usual playfully inspiring self & as we had decided to wear hats to celebrate the "Australia Wide" theme, the Vegemite beanie was very appropriate. I dusted off my Akubra from Mt Isa days & Bob was happy snapping photos. Pity I didn't take 1 of him in his check shirt, jeans & Akubra!
