Table runner class- Mongolia

 

The table runner is made of silk scraps. The Mongolian Quilt Centre is very good at recycling the off-cuts into beautiful new pieces of work, with crazy patchwork a favourite technique. Nothing goes to waste here! The silk is easier to handle with an iron-on interfacing. Carefully cut using centimetres for measurement, the square are then marked with the seam allowance.

Sewing is mostly done on these hand turned machines with the thread spool lying under the hand wheel.

Unpicking and realignment to get the accuracy needed. We pressed the seams open as the fabric plus interfacing is quite thick.

Batik

Batik, the art of wax designs, dyed and redrawn and redyed multiple times is a dying art in the age of mass production. So I can appreciate and enjoy the design and workmanship on this small tablecloth on our kitchen table.

 

Klungkung

Klungkung, an ancient Balinese capital has a great market for fabrics. The cotton woven lengths are neatly folded and expertly cut with the yardstick.

Colourful fabric

Picked out this colourful, fun fabric covered with fish, crabs, starfish and jellyfish as my birthday fat quarter from Sunnybank Quilters. Luckily I have the brights in my stash and will probably make something for the Melbourne grandchildren.
