Otranto

Otranto is the eastern most point of the heel and have one of the most expensive parking rates at 1.50 euro / hour near the historic centre where the interesting bits are.
This is one of the entry gates. The castle was closed for repairs but we did see the amazing 12th century mosaic floor in Cattedrale di Santa Maria Annunziata. The central theme is the tree of life and the size is stunning, even though most parts are covered by the pews. It is said to be the work of a monk.
The church also houses the bones of the 800 beheaded by the Turks because they refused to convert in 1480.

  1. Beheading - hadn't thought of that as a way to convert someone!!!!! Man does some atrocious things in the name of religion.
