Rubbing Lecce

A day trip to Lecce was another opportunity to look down and discover 2 crests on the covers in the streets. Between 1pm- 3.30pm is the quietest time when people are home for lunch, shops are closed and street traffic drops off.
Lecce's symbol is the wolf and the Roman axe is on most of the covers in the Salento/ Pugliese region.
Paper mache is the craft in Lecce and this figure displays the stages of production from head to toe.

The main cathedral has a large piazza in front of it. Lecce was full of tour groups the day we visited and we were lucky to find the crypt under the nave before closing time.
Each column has a different capitol.
Beautiful floor tiles, which seem to be a feature of churches in this region.
Amazing history under foot.

Most of the frescos were removed for repair or restoration, but this remaining one showed how beautiful they must have been.
