Rubbing Japan

With gorgeous sewer covers like these in Japan, I couldn't resist taking my oil sticks to them. The white cranes are in Himeji where the World Heritage listed White Crane Castle is.
People would often stop & tell us things, but it was all in Japanese & we don't speak the language. Only had to avoid a truck once in 1 of the locations.

  1. Now this makes me grin! I've photographed Hemiji's and dozens of towns' and villages' manhole covers but I've never done rubbings on them. I, silly me, never take my "stuff" with me...just the camera. Of course, I may rethink that now that I've seen your pics.

Actually my daughter and family are there now visiting my son...boy, do I wish I'd sent paintsticks along with her. Thanks for the posting.

  2. Never having been to Japan I just had to Google Japanese manhole covers and was absolutely amazed at the artwork involved.

  4. Sue. When I met you in Sydney you did not mention that you were going to Japan. I spent April there this year with the cherry blossoms in full bloom. They were especialy beautiful at Himeji Castle. I just photographed the manholes. What a lovely idea to rub them.
